AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) activists protest at the Food & Drug Administration today, starting at 10 am Eastern. Protesters will raise concerns about a proposal to approve Truvada for use as an HIV preventative in healthy people.
The drug produced by California's Gilead Sciences has been shown to be promising in preventing HIV transmission, but so far has not achieved a greater effectiveness than 60% in studies. The drug now costs approximately $35 per day, must be taken every day, and has possible side effects which can be significant. The cost, health risk from side effects, and the possibility of creating a false sense of security leading to risky behavior are all concerns in approving the use the drug in otherwise healthy individuals. The drug must be taken every day to achieve even its limited degree of efficacy.
