
Billy Don Moyers was born in Hugo, Oklahoma, 10 June 1934. He spent much of his youth in Marshall, Texas, and at the age of 16 he began working for the Marshall News Messenger. In 1952, he wrote a letter applying for work with Senator Lyndon Johnson. He attended North Texas State where he met his wife Judith Davidson. They transferred to the University of Texas (Austin), and Moyers worked at the Johnson family television station KTBC while in school. He was graduated with a BA in Journalism in 1956. He continued his study at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Edinburgh. He was awarded a BD by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1959, and he is an ordained Baptist minister.
In the Kennedy administration, Moyers was public affairs director and deputy director of the Peace Corp. He became Special Assistant to President Johnson including a couple of years as Press Secretary. In the latter part of the '60s he was publisher of Newsday.
His association with PBS began in 1971 with Bill Moyer's Journal. In spite of some work with CBS, his work with PBS, including special projects such as The Power of Myth with Joseph Campbell, is best known today. He has received numerous Emmies and Peabody awards.
