
Laura Furman was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 19, 1945. She attained a BA at Bennington in 1968. She has resided in Texas since 1978 when she became senior editor of Houston City Magazine. In 1983 she moved to Austin to teach at The University of Texas at Austin where she is now an associate professor of English and teaches fiction in the graduate creative writing program. She is married to TIL member Joel Warren Barnaand resides in Austin.
Furman is a founding editor of American Short Stories, and is the current editor of the O. Henry prize series. She is the author of three novels, a memoir, and numerous essays and short stories, and has edited many collections and anthologies.
Furman's books include: Tuxedo Park, Drinking with the Cook, The Shadow Line, and Ordinary Paradise (memoir).
