Lawrence George Wright was born August 2, 1947, in Oklahoma City. He grew up in Dallas, and graduated from Tulane. He was awarded an MA in applied linguistics from American University in Cairo where he taught English in the late '60s and early '70s and acquired a knowlege of Arabic and Islamic culture.
Wright has worked for Southern Voices, Texas Monthly, has been a contributing editor of Rolling Stone, and is on the staff of The New Yorker.
His books include: City Children, Country Summer, In the New World: Growing Up with America, 1960—1984, Saints & Sinners, Remembering Satan, Twins: Genes, Environment, and the Mystery of Identity, and a novel based on Panama's Gen. Noriega God's Favorite. He co-wrote The Siege which starred Denzel Washington and wrote a Showtime movie based on his novel.
Wright founded Texas Writers Month and Capital Area Statues.
