Robert (Lopez) Flynn was born April 12, 1932 in Chillicothe, Texas. He graduated from Baylor in 1954. In 1962 he left a position as an assistant professor of drama at Baylor suddenly to become writer-in-residence in the English department at Trinity University. After writing a successful adaptation to the stage of Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, he was called to prose, in which he has been very prolific, mostly in Western novels and books depicting the lighter side of Christianity, and a memoir of his experiences as correspondent in Vietnam.
His books include: North to Yesterday, In the House of the Lord, The Sounds of Rescue, the Signs of Hope, Wanderer Springs, Seasonal Rain (stories), Living with the Hyenas (stories), And Holy is His Name, A Personal War in Vietnam, (memoir) Tie-Fast Country, The Last Klick, Growing Up a Sullen Baptist: and Other Lies (essays), and Slouching Toward Zion and More Lies.
